Last week, more than 1,000 software developers and device manufacturers gathered at the third annual Tizen Developer Conference (TCD) in San Francisco. Last week, more than 1,000 software developers and device manufacturers gathered at the third annual Tizen Developer Conference (TCD) in San Francisco. Attendees enjoyed an exciting two days with the unveiling of a number of new devices, prototypes, and developer tools.

At the event, we were encouraged to interact with many of the IoT innovations that allow users and businesses to streamline connections in our daily lives. High points included:
• Sharing our location with Glympse’s Family Map Service using Tizen devices like Samsung’s Gear S3 and Family Hub Refrigerator
• Browsing and securely purchasing a selection of trending consumables with Android to Tizen’s (A2T) Wish Mobile App
• Viewing videos optimized for Smart TVs with advanced playback and customization tools using NexStreaming’s NexPlayer for Tizen

Conference highlights included discussions around the endless possibilities and challenges of the IoT era. Taesoo Jun from Samsung Electronics spoke about Tizen’s development in IoT platforms like microwaves and refrigerators. Raj Devnath from Samsung introduced the audience to ARTIK hardware and how it can be leveraged to create IoT end nodes. Jeanine Jue from Samsung Cloud gave an overview of ARTIK cloud, an open data exchange platform for the Internet of Things, and demoed a sample application running on Tizen OS.

The future is moving towards limitless connectivity across every industry. This is great for users, companies and investment as it means a better experience and more data to make informed decisions.

One of the biggest takeaways of the event was the emphasis on the need for security for these IoT devices. Ron Ih, Director of Business Development for Kyrio’s Security Solutions, explained how Kyrio uses identity-based security solutions and their experience in network access control help solve security issues for IoT applications. Kyrio is the secure Root host for Samsung Electronics and created the PKI trust chain that is embedded in ARTIK’s secure element product line. This PKI provides an established chain of trust across systems incorporating ARTIK secure elements so their identity and origin can be verified through digital certificates.

Certificates deployed in secure elements can be used to greatly improve security for IoT devices used in every major industry and enable additional major improvements: mutual authentication, secure communications, secure execution, and secure updates and downloads. This is because these certificates cannot be easily altered, spoofed or forged and are unique and traceable. Ron ended with explaining how device makers that make the right decisions early in the design cycle not only will be in a better position to protect themselves, but will also have new functionality available to them.

Additionally, TDC delivered a number of major announcements and innovations across the IoT ecosystem. The event may be over, but the IoT era of endless connectivity is just getting started, and security is one of the major issues that must be addressed.
