DOCSIS 3.1 Deployment: Excitement and Challenges

Excitement is growing around DOCSIS 3.1® technology now that devices are starting to enter the market: Comcast has already made commercial launches, and other operators such as TDC in Denmark have announced commercial launches this year.

And why shouldn’t there be excitement? DOCSIS 3.1 technology has always promised a cost effective way to offer gigabit services, as well as a pathway toward providing 10 Gbps downstream and 1 Gbps upstream capacities on HFC networks that cable operators already own, through a combination of new technologies, including Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and new Forward Error Correction techniques that result in higher modulation orders and robustness. But now these devices are no longer just theoretical: the devices are real, and the technology is being proven both in the lab and in the field, driving the excitement.

In order to support this move into the field, CableLabs last year launched a certification program that was redesigned to support the rapid development and deployment of DOCSIS 3.1 devices by ensuring compliance to the DOCSIS 3.1 specifications and interoperability between devices. Since then CableLabs has certified 10 different DOCSIS 3.1 cable modems, directly supporting the field rollouts now taking place.

However, the reality — particularly in these early days — is that these devices are continuing to rapidly evolve and change: manufacturers are continuing to add new features and enhancements that cable operators will want to deploy on their plants. Although DOCSIS 3.1 technology is incredibly adaptable, it can also be very complex, which requires a new way of configuring and deploying devices.

As operators look to deploy DOCSIS 3.1 services, Kyrio Testing Services can leverage CableLabs’ expertise in DOCSIS devices and testing to help with these challenges and support their rollout.

Kyrio is able to provide a wide range of testing services for DOCSIS 3.1 cable modems and gateway devices, which includes the following benefits:

  • Ensuring that any code updates to devices are still compliant with the specification
  • Validating and optimizing operator configurations
  • Benchmark performance and stability testing of various solutions
  • End-to-end system testing

Additionally, Kyrio is also able to provide performance testing for other device interfaces, such as Wi-Fi. All of these testing services are conducted in our state-of-the-art facilities, where Kyrio experts can also assist in understanding how to use DOCSIS 3.1 technology and how to leverage it in each operator’s unique environment.

The deployment of DOCSIS 3.1 devices brings lots of excitement and many challenges; Kyrio Testing Services stands ready to assist in making it a reality.
